Story and photos by Julie Diebolt Price

Introduction

Bicycles dominate the landscape as earth-conscious residents in and around Portland, Oregon, avoid vehicle ownership, and commute via leg power or public transportation.

With many ways to reach your destination and countless ways to entertain yourself, this major port in the Willamette Valley embraces about 655,000 residents. Once a star in the Pacific Northwest, Portland is a diverse collection of independent thinkers, achievers, reformers, artists, naturalists, foodies, breweries, and just plain folks.

Twelve bridges cross the Willamette River in Portland. The two presented here are the gothic-style St. Johns Bridge, the tallest and only suspension bridge in the Willamette Valley. Tilikum Crossing, the newest bridge, is closed to private vehicular traffic. This sleek and modern transportation hub is named “Bridge of the People” and is an impressive experience in the Portland landscape.

Join me on this journey through and around Portland, as we keep it weird, experience sweet voodoo, read some books, paddle on the Willamette, scorch our mouths on Devil Wings, or ride bikes across the Tilikum Bridge…and, so much more!
