Obviously, wine is a big draw in Paso Robles. In addition to fantastic wines, what makes Paso Robles extra special is the natural scenic beauty of the area, ideal weather, and the many smaller family-run wineries among the over 200 wineries in the area. This close-knit community of some 30,000 people is known for its sunny days, rolling hills, friendly folks, and small-town values.
Location and Terroir
Paso Robles is located about three hours northwest of Los Angeles Airport (LAX) in San Luis Obispo County. There is also a small airport in Paso Robles. Roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, Paso Robles is about 30 miles from the Pacific Ocean. This proximity to the ocean brings in cool marine air, which coupled with the variety of elevations and types of soils, creates one of the most varied terroirs for wine growing in California.

The western hills in the Adelaide District have a more rugged terrain with elevations up to 2,000 feet, while the area east of downtown is flatter and warmer for more full bodied grapes. This varied landscape creates diverse growing conditions, distinct vineyard sites, and an ideal climate for Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Rhône varietals.
Wineries in Paso Robles
Paso Robles is home to more than 200 wineries, ranging from iconic estates to small family-run gems. Some of the largest Paso Robles-based wineries include J Lohr, Justin, DAOU, Hope, and Eberle. The vast majority of wineries are smaller, family-owned producers with limited production.

During our visit, we experienced standout wineries including Eberle, Glunz Family Winery, Whalebone, Tablas, Alta Colina, MAHA Estate | Villa Creek, J Dusi, DAOU, Tobin James Cellars, Villa San Juliette, and Steinbeck Vineyards—each offering unique wines, welcoming hospitality, and scenic vineyard views. For the Paso Robles Guide we chose a mix of larger wineries along with several smaller producers, all with outstanding reviews for their wines and tasting experiences.
Obviously, there are many more wonderful wineries that we did not have time to visit and hope to add to our own experiences in a future visit. We would love to hear about your recommendations in our Comments section.
