Beautiful Ventura on California’s Coast
Ventura is a sun-drenched city on the California Coast, just a couple of hours northwest of Los Angeles Airport (LAX). During our short three-day visit, we had the opportunity to walk the beaches and pier, venture downtown, visit the gorgeous Botanical Gardens, try some great restaurants, and contemplate the meaning of life. I also made a short day trip to Hearst Castle and Chamisal Vineyards from Ventura before moving on to Paso Robles for another three days to visit some wonderful wineries. Ventura was full of natural beauty, fantastic food and drink, cool architecture, and words of wisdom.
Ventura Botanical Gardens
I spent an entire morning at the beautiful Ventura Botanical Gardens. High up on a hill just behind City Hall, the Ventura Botanical Gardens overlook the city of Ventura and the vast Pacific Ocean. I was lucky the day was sunny with a slight ocean breeze cooling the area.

I loved the way the Ventura Botanical Gardens is organized into distinct themed sections representing Mediterranean-climate regions worldwide. Beginning at the Welcome Center and nursery, I followed the large mosaic of white petals painted on the ground, which led me to the Chilean Garden, filled with rare and endangered species. Next, the central Ramble showcases native California plants. As I hiked higher up, I encountered olive groves in the Mediterranean Garden, protea and aloe in the South African Fynbos and Karoo Gardens, and the expansive California Garden with pines and wildflowers. Several scenic stops like Rotary Plaza and the Summit Plateau offer sweeping coastal views and rest areas for prime Ventura Botanic Gardens overlook vistas.

Once you enter the gardens, signage is limited. I recommend you take a photo of the grounds at the entrance and spend a few minutes to understand the layout before starting your trek. Also, I would plan on at least two hours to cover the gardens, and longer if you like to stop often and soak up the ambience.

Top Tips for Enjoying the Ventura Botanical Gardens
- Take a photo of the map grounds at the entrance and take a few minutes to study
- Consider time of year and temperatures when planning your visit
- Bring plenty of water
- Take your time – stop often, enjoy the views, take photos to preserve your memories
- Early morning or late afternoon are great times to go to beat the crowds
Words of Wisdom in the Gardens
In addition to the beautiful plants, flowers, and artwork, the trails are filled with insightful quoted words of wisdom that greatly add to the experience. While admiring the many works of nature, I found these words of wisdom having deeper meaning among the surrounding natural displays. In the tranquil quiet, with no rushed schedule, no crowds, and no distractions, I felt an inner peace as I reflected on each thoughtful quote.
We can all learn a thing or two from these wonderful words of wisdom.

Serra Cross Overlooking Ventura
Perched high above Ventura overlooking the city and the ocean, the Serra Cross is a beloved symbol of the city. With a unique history and significance, it stately rises above the town. Although Serra Cross has a road you can drive or walk to the small park, you can also walk the trails from the Botanical Gardens. The Serra Cross traces its origins to 1782, when Junípero Serra blessed a wooden cross overlooking the city. It has been rebuilt several times, and today’s structure honors the enduring cultural legacy of early California settlement.

Eat and Drink in Ventura
Ventura has a relaxed, coastal food scene rooted in fresh, local ingredients and global flavors. As expected in a coastal town, seafood is a standout—halibut, fish tacos, ceviche, and harbor front dining. The walkable downtown area offers trendy bistros, craft breweries, and farm-to-table spots, while the pier and harbor feature casual eateries with ocean views. Other popular food choices include authentic Mexican cuisine, alongside Italian, Asian fusion, steak houses, and classic California fare. The nearby farmland and wineries influence menus with seasonal produce and local wines, creating a laid-back yet vibrant culinary culture that reflects Ventura’s beach-town charm.

Since we stayed at the Crowne Plaza Hotel by the pier, we loved the convenience and quality of Aloha Steakhouse, Ventura’s only beachfront restaurant. Featuring hand-cut steaks, fresh seafood, prime rib, and friendly service, Aloha was so good we returned a second night during our short stay. They also offer complimentary parking, are dog-friendly, and have two large outdoor patios to take advantage of the nice weather and beautiful ocean views. I also enjoyed my lunch at Topper’s, a very popular pizza place with several locations in Ventura and the surrounding area.
