The buildings are Budapest’s story. Culture, politics, and humanity are stamped into the architecture and written on the walls, echoing the changes wrought by invasion, war, control, and, finally, freedom to shape their own lives.

It’s a wonderful city for a family day out. Here is our suggested day, featuring traditional Hungarian cuisine, nature at the zoo, cycling, walking, architecture, boating, festivals, and more.
Start With Family Lunch at Gundel
In Budapest, there exists a timeless location where the ways of working, eating, and conducting business have remained consistent, even amid shifting political currents. For 130 years, one place has stood as the ambassador of Hungarian gastronomy: Gundel Restaurant. Károly Gundel, the founder, is considered by many to be the master of Hungarian hospitality.
Opened in 1894 next to the Budapest Zoo, Gundel has remained a touchstone of excellence in Hungarian gastronomy. These words from the restaurant say it better than we ever could—

We were lucky enough to have a lovely Sunday Family Dinner there. It was warm and welcoming, with a classic elegance. We want to share our experience and suggest it to you and your travel companions.

Gundel Restaurant offers a menu that celebrates traditional Hungarian cuisine, crafted with a modern touch. With over 140 original recipes, each dish tells a story of the country’s fine culinary heritage. We were told to expect classic favorites such as Gulyás (goulash), Pörkölt (stew), and the iconic Gundel Palacsinta, a delicate pancake filled with nuts and drizzled with dark chocolate sauce.
The menu is a treat for both your eyes and taste buds. They take pride in presenting dishes beautifully, highlighting the fresh, local ingredients used. Seasonal offerings contain Hungary’s finest produce, ensuring each visit to Gundel is a unique culinary experience.
Sunday Family Lunch
For families, Gundel’s Sunday Family Lunch is a highlight, served family-style to encourage sharing and connection. The special meal includes a variety of dishes, allowing everyone to sample the diversity of Hungarian flavors.
We enjoyed a delightful starter of chilled sour cherry juice, followed by an assortment of freshly baked breads and Körözött (Hungarian paprika cheese spread). Then came the creamy mushroom soup served in a lovely ceramic tureen. Next, a platter of crispy, juicy fried chicken, fried vegetables, and parsley potatoes. Dishes of parsley rice, fluffy, buttery mashed potatoes, a green salad, and fruit compote added the perfect sweet touch to our meal.
And then came dessert: layered pancakes filled with walnut cream, poppy seed cream, apple-apricot jam, baked with meringue, and served with vanilla custard. The mouthwatering treat was paired with Tokaj, a sweet, aromatic wine with an elegant flavor. It felt as though we were experiencing Hungary’s rich culinary history.

Gundel’s wine list beautifully complements the meals, featuring renowned local wines that greatly enhance your dining experience. The list features a curated selection of exceptional Hungarian wines, including renowned varieties such as Tokaji Aszú, Furmint, and Kadarka.

Family Day Out
Gundel is located in City Park (Városliget). The park offers a variety of experiences. We spent the afternoon admiring the sculptures in Hero’s Square, strolling in the park, visiting the castle, paddling around the lake, and watching model boat races.
Our grand finale was a fabulous light sculpture exhibit at the zoo that everyone loved. It featured a delightful array of animals and birds, all crafted from bright, colorful silk stretched over wire frames. Each sculpture was thoughtfully designed to highlight each animal’s distinctive traits, making them seem almost alive. As the sun set, the sculptures were softly lit from within, casting a warm glow that added to the magic of the evening. City Park is a wonderful blend of nature, culture, and leisure.

Zoo & Botanical Garden: The Budapest Zoo, one of the world’s oldest zoos, is home to a wide variety of animals. The nearby botanical garden features a tranquil setting filled with diverse plant species.
Heroes’ Square: Located just outside the park, this iconic square is home to the Millennium Monument, which commemorates Hungary’s national leaders. It’s a great spot for photos and to learn about Hungarian history.
Vajdahunyad Castle: This picturesque castle showcases a variety of architectural styles and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. You can explore its museum, which features Hungarian agricultural history.
Széchenyi Thermal Bath: One of the largest and most famous thermal baths in Europe, it’s a perfect place to relax in natural thermal waters. The impressive architecture makes for a unique bathing and family experience.
Boating on the Lake: In warmer months, you can rent pedal boats on the lake in the park, providing a fun way to relax and enjoy the scenery.
Cycling and Walking Paths: The park is perfect for a leisurely walk or bike ride. You’ll find beautiful paths lined with trees and gardens.
