Buddy is our fluffy, lovable, energetic, always happy grand puppy. A typical Goldendoodle, Buddy joined the family for a memorable stay at the luxurious Broadmoor, Colorado’s 5-Star luxury resort at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Along with Buddy, my wife, two sons, and daughter-in-law spent a fabulous two days at The Broadmoor on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Join Buddy in the fun video and article below about the fabulous Broadmoor!

Christmas and New Year’s Eve at The Broadmoor

My older son, William, is in the military stationed in Colorado Springs, and we have visited him there often over the past few years. We always make time to visit The Broadmoor, and this particular visit was very special. We booked a cottage along the golf course on the south side of the property, a quiet and secluded area, but still within easy walking distance to the main buildings and amenities. At Christmas and New Year’s at The Broadmoor guests get to experience the added lights, decorations, and holiday ambiance of this special luxury resort.

Our Beautiful Cottage at The Broadmoor

We loved the view from our cottage. With two separate bedrooms each with its own bath, a large living room with comfortable seating for all of us, and a patio in the front with furniture and beautiful views of a bridge, pond, golf course, and mountains in the backdrop. We watched the University of Texas beat Michigan in the Citrus Bowl – Go Longhorns! Even though I’m an Aggie, my older son graduated from UT, so I root for the Longhorns – except, of course, when they play the Aggies! Buddy kept wanting to root for the Dawgs, but I had to tell him that Georgia had already lost and was done for the season.

Buddy found his own special spot on the couch, even though The Broadmoor provided him with a luxury dogbed! He played and rested just like he was at home. The Broadmoor also provided snacks to nibble on (for us humans!), including delicious spiced nuts, mixed treats, and some of the best chocolate-covered butter toffee I’ve ever had.

Perfect Weather on the Scenic Grounds of The Broadmoor

Although it was the middle of winter, we had no snow. The weather was in the 40 and 50s, sunny, a bit chilly but perfect for enjoying the beautiful grounds of The Broadmoor. Buddy decided to wear his stylish sweater, since he wasn’t used to the relatively cool Colorado temperatures. He loved exploring the bridges, ponds, golf grounds (the course was closed when we stayed), and chased a few squirrels climbing through the trees. He also made a few new canine friends, but mostly devoted to more time bonding with his humans.

The Broadmoor at Christmas and New Year’s

The Broadmoor also goes all out during the holidays. Approaching the main entrance of The Broadmoor on Lake Avenue, we were greeted by a line of pine trees lit up at night with blankets of white lights. A large, joyous red ribbon on a wreath glowed above the main entrance, welcoming visitors to the resort. As the valet parked our car, we entered through the front door to the beautiful lobby. To our right were the vintage bottles of various liquors dating back over a century lining the hallway to the restrooms.

Amazing Christmas Gingerbread Displays at The Broadmoor

In the upstairs lobby, The Broadmoor displays a large Christmas display made of gingerbread and massive amounts of sugar, eggs, flour, dark chocolate, butter, and spices. Skilled confectioners, bakers, and other members of the culinary team spend many hours creating this magical centerpiece. This year the display focused on Santa in his sleigh, surrounded by elves, presents, and decorated trees. In previous years that we visited, guests were treated to a large antique car made of gingerbread and candies, and a fanciful boat, the USS Julie, another year. Since my wife’s name is Julie, we got a kick out of this one.

The Elegant Penrose Room, One of the Premier Dining Destinations in Colorado Springs

We had a lovely dinner at The Penrose Room on New Year’s Eve. Perched at the top of the south tower overlooking the twinkling lights of Colorado Springs to the east on one side and Cheyenne Mountain towards the west, the Penrose Room is an elegant setting for any special occasion. It  was recently renovated to its current pristine state, and retains its status as one of the premier restaurants in Colorado Springs. We rode the elevator up to the top floor where we were warmly greeted by Penrose Room staff. Penrose does require jackets for gentlemen, so the two of us who did not have jackets were given loaners for the evening.

We started our meal with a Penrose Room Caesar Salad made tableside, which was fun to watch. The menu had many tempting offerings. I love Halibut, and when I saw it on the menu I almost ordered it automatically. However, they also had a Thai Barbecued Red Snapper served with Black Garlic Fried Rice, Bok Choy, Grilled Pineapple, Serrano Pepper Relish, and Broccolini that caught my eye, which I opted for. The fish was tender and flavorful, with the sauce giving it just the right amount of heat and flavor. Julie and William ordered the Japanese White Miso Glazed Pacific Halibut with Sautéed Spinach and Crushed Fingerling Potatoes, which looked fabulous. Our daughter-in-law ordered sushi, including The Penrose Room Roll, consisting of Tempura Shrimp, Spicy Ahi Tuna, Avocado, with Whiskey Barrel Aged Shoyu, and the Eagles Nest Ranch Wagyu Beef Tataki Roll. Jacob was happy with his Côtes de Veau, a Char-Grilled 14 ounce Bone-in Veal Chop served with Twice Baked Truffle Yukon, Tobacco Onions, and Bordelaise. All of our dishes were delicious. The Penrose Room was the perfect place for great food, lovely views, impeccable service, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Amazing Sights and Decorations at The Broadmoor

Waking up on New Year’s Day before the rest of the famiIy, I took a walk at 6 am and marveled at the tranquil sights around The Broadmoor. As I walked around Cheyenne Lake, I stopped to view the white glimmering lights around the lake. Dozens of geese and swans floated effortlessly on the lake in the semi-darkness. In colorful contrast, the giant Christmas tree on the west side of the lake glowed brightly with spheres of red, green, pink, and blue lighting the night sky. The reflection of these lights on the lake provided a whimsical scene with geese gathered on the glassy surface that reflected these lights.

As beautiful as the lights around the lake were, I got an even bigger thrill on my return to the cottage. The time was approaching 7 am and sunrise, and the sky was lit with a brilliant pinkish red and deep blue. The scene above our cottage was a vivid canvas for about ten minutes before finally giving way to the blue sky of the morning.

Come Check Out The Broadmoor

The Broadmoor is truly something special. On previous stays and visits, my family and I have had the privilege to experience the magical Falconry class at The Broadmoor, the spectacular Seven Falls, and the outstanding FINS zipline course located on Broadmoor property in this Colorado wonderland. We have also dined at the fantastic Ristorante Del Lago, the beautiful Lake Terrance Dining Room, and the fun Golden Bee. For anyone visiting Colorado Springs, I highly recommend checking out The Broadmoor, a true jewel at the foot of the majestic Rocky Mountains.
